In the early days of Dog Shows, franchises were granted by the American Kennel Club to an individual who wished to create a franchise relating to an All Breed kennel club. David H. Upright applied for and was granted a franchise which he named the Harbor Cities Kennel Club (HCKC). When David Upright decided to retire from his professional career he made the decision to retire the HCKC franchise. This action left Los Angeles without a Club. Within two weeks two other Southland Kennel Club’s, the Glendale Kennel Club (GKC) and the Beverly Riviera Kennel Club (BRKC) discontinued operations. Glendale Kennel Club which ceased with the death of Mr. Hugh A. Lewis and Beverly Riviera Kennel Club which David Upright also headed. In order to fill the void created by the loss of these three shows, three prominent canine authorities, Atty. John O'Melveny, Albert Van Court and Kristian Ursin decided to create a new Dog Show Club to be called the Kennel Club of Beverly Hills (KCBH). In all, KCBH had 39 Charter members. In 1965 the first of the Shows the Kennel Club of Beverly Hills produced was a 2 day benched show held at the Pan Pacific Auditorium. In 1966 it was decided by the members that they would attempt to put on two shows a year. In January of 1967 they held their first winter show at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. In 1968 the decision was made to do away with bench shows. Both shows were held at the Sports Arena through January of 1969. In June of 1969 it was decided to move to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium for the June show only...this remained a two day show. The winter shows being one day held at the Sports Arena and the summer show being a two day show held at the Santa Monica Auditorium. Currently KCBH produces a winter and summer show. The winter show is accompanied by the American Kennel Club National Invitational show held at the Long Beach Convention Center. The summer show moves locations to accommodate the exhibitors and public. Please feel free to contact us at info@kennelclubofbeverlyhills.com
